Avoiding Business Conflicts

Tips for Preparing for Your Summer Move

by Arthur Bates

Out of all the seasons, summer continues to be the most popular for people to relocate. There are many reasons for this, including favorable weather and the children are out of school. Unfortunately, this can cause some problems if you want to move. Luckily, with a few tips, it is possible to ensure that your summer move is a successful one.

Book Your Moving Company Well in Advance

Since summer is a popular season for moving, some of the more popular moving companies will get booked up—and fast. Figure out which moving company you would prefer to do business with and get in touch with them as soon as you know you need to move. The sooner you can contact them about your move, the better the chances are of having more flexibility in your moving date.

Have a Yard Sale

When the weather forecast looks good, consider hosting a yard sale so that you can get rid of some of the extra items around the house that you don't need and don't want to take to your new home. This should be done several weeks before your moving day. Anything that is not sold can be donated.

Give Yourself Plenty of Time to Pack

It is important to ensure that all of your stuff is ready to go come the day of the actual move. In other words, you want to ensure that all of your drawers are emptied, and everything is packed except for your essentials. This will help make sure that the moving company can come in and get to work immediately without having to wait on you to pack up any last-minute items that were forgotten about. You may want to ensure that you spread your packing over a few weeks to give yourself plenty of time to pack efficiently.

Think Twice about Packing Heat-Sensitive Items

There are certain items that you likely will not want to pack into the moving truck, as some things are sensitive to heat—and the back of a moving truck can get pretty hot during the summertime. So, candles, artwork, electronics, etc. should be kept with you in your personal vehicle if at all possible. If they cannot fit in your personal vehicle, then make sure that they remain in the home until the very last minute and then packed into the moving truck. Don't forget to also label these boxes carefully so that they can be unpacked first at the new home.
